| In 1826 the completed house and property [Maplehurst] were acquired by Aylmer Haly, of the 4th K.O. Dragoons, in exchange for his estate of Beaudesert and vineyard in the Commune of Onzouer-sur-Tresse, in Canton Briare. Haly at the same time bought from Henry Playsted Luck's land, adjoining Scrag Oak.............. Haly turned Maplehurst into Wadhurst Castle "by reason of its situation on the verge of the town." |

| In 1844 Luck's Land was in the occupation of Captain Barlow. A little later the village Doctor Mercer lived there - a much esteemed man and a fine horseman. The house was demolished when Uplands was built, a little behind it, by the then Squire for his younger son, Robert Watson Smyth. |
