In 1826 the completed house and property [Maplehurst] were acquired by Aylmer Haly, of the 4th K.O. Dragoons, in exchange for his estate of Beaudesert and vineyard in the Commune of Onzouer-sur-Tresse, in Canton Briare. Haly at the same time bought from Henry Playsted Luck's land, adjoining Scrag Oak. … Haly turned Maplehurst into Wadhurst Castle "by reason of its situation on the verge of the town."

In 1844 Luck's Land was in the occupation of Captain Barlow. A little later the village Doctor Mercer lived there - a much esteemed man and a fine horseman. The house was demolished when Uplands was built, a little behind it, by the then Squire for his younger son, Robert Watson Smyth.
